Visited the Canteen last night and I can't speak highly enough of it. The service was warm and inviting and the food was amazing. I had given up on eating out as vege meals are always so disappointing. However, I have to say I was not disappointed with the fantastic food I was served last night. I had to stop my meat loving husband from trying to savour the vege delights on my plate after he had devoured his lamb curry! Also, what I really liked was that Wayne the chef took the time at the end of the evening to have a chat with us. I love the philosophy behind the Canteen. We will definitely be back. I can't wait!

My friend and Myself had a 3 course meal at the Restaurant and I would just like to comment on how 'AMAZING' the quality of the 3 courses were.
The quantity of each course was spot on and the timing between each course was superb.
Having never eaten at a vegetarian restaurant before (as i am not a vegetarian) I would most definatley be eating there again and would definatley reccomend it to anyone.
The service was so professional and they were very friendly and chatty and nothing was too much trouble. The waitress, leeanne was so friendly and welcoming and the waiter, Ellis (i think) was chatty and polite. - just a very enjoyable evening and shall see you all soon!!

We experienced another wonderful foodie evening at Canteen last night while sampling Wayne's Italian menu. Loved the courgette cannelloni, the aubergine ripieni and the white chocolate risotto (fab). This restaurant is truly a culinary delight!! Also to be recommended is Wayne's singing!! If you haven't tried Canteen, make it a must this weekend.

Wow! A nearly all-vegetarian restaurant in Wales--and one that is offering a menu inspired by my very favorite restaurant from home: Millennium Restaurant!
I found a listing for Canteen on Clifton Street, followed the link, and had a wonderful time exploring your website, including Wayne's answers. Hooray for a restauranteur that understands the necessity of keeping cookware "vegetarian kosher".
I mapped the location and directions from my hotel and eagerly looked for the opening hours... only to find that--Darn!--not open tonight. It's my last night in Wales before I head to London and so I will, sadly, miss out on your Millennium menu.
I am a recent transplant from the San Francisco Bay Area and a vegetarian of 21 years. It's so hard moving from the epicenter of excellent cutting-edge vegetarian cuisine to, well, the land of black pudding. Eek!
So sorry to have not had the opportunity to sample your versions of recipes from my favorite place back home. Keep up the good work-- Cheers, Stacey

I was one of the "Girls" on Lou Johnson's hen night and I totally agree with her. The atmosphere and the food were great, especially the chocolate and stout pudding! I got very excited when I tasted it. Very kindly you said you would put it on the website and I'm glad to see you were true to your word. I will be making it as I've been telling everyone about how wonderful it is. Thanks again for a great night. X

Well, blow me! What a find...
Me and four of my best mates were on my hen weekend, staying further west near Llantwit Major. But as I'm Cardiff-born and bred, we thought a night reaping the delights of Welsh food-fare was required. The Canteen matched our expectations and more.
We were sat right by the kitchen, a let-down in any other restaurant, but here seeing the chefs weave their magic at work (& play) was all part of the culinary delight. The food was fast, fresh, tasty and very inventive. The five of us vowed to return, and that was before we'd even got to the sweet course. The Chocolate & Stout pudding really was the best desert any of us had ever tasted, and I'm really pleased to see the recipe for it on your download list - thanks. In one word, this place is SUPERB!!
Looking forward to my return trips to Cardiff where your food, music and ambience will definately be on the itinerary!!
many thanks.
Lou

What a find!
This place was perfect for catching up with old friends, eating great food and drinking wine - all excellent value. If only eating out was always this good! Only sad thing is that it's in Cardiff and I'm in Nottingham!

the St patricks day feast - the lads in the kitchen excelled themselves. The guiness and steak pie with the bread and butter pudding and chocolate sauce to follow? An instant classic. You would have to be considered clinically insane to have missed it. The chefs would have to be considered so if they never cook it again
Well done "the Canteen" - you're the best eatery in Cardiff bar none

We visited on Valentines day and had a fantastic meal, without all the usual over priced tat that you get elsewhere. Very friendly chef and staff, and fast efficient service, A little gem!!!

Canteen on Clifton St is my new favourite place to eat. I had guests for the weekend, made a really late booking knowing nothing about Canteen and it was fantastic. I've been out for dinner with my vegetarain friend often enough to know how frustrating it is to have only one choice or make a meal out of starters. Love the fact that you've turned it on it's head and offer one meat dish among delicious veg. options. The mutton tagin was so flavoursome, I can still relive it in quiet moments.
have recommended you to everyone I know!
Thanks
Victoria

We'd been looking forward to eating here for a while and we were not disappointed! Lovely, tasty, fresh ingredients on the lunch menu and good prices. It's a pity you're not open a bit later in the evenings though and gutted that there is meat served as I was expecting a vegetarian place.

Hiyyyyaaaaa.
I haven't been to visit you yet as I've been working loads recently, but I'm looking forward to the pleasure. I've been a Vegetarian for 30 years and lived in Splott for the last 20. I lived in Hackney for 9 years and was used to having these kind of places nearby, so I'm in Heaven. Isn't Clifton Street at a turning Point with 'Simply Steve's' Deli/patisserie and 'Hungry Planet' Wholefood/alternative shop opening recently. I'll see you this week!

We visited your restaurant for the first time last night, the first big night out in the New Year! We had a fabulous meal (we can recommend the Chillie Bean Parcel) and the choice of Starters was great too. Loved the personal touch when Wayne introduced himself, the general atmosphere, the quirky music and my husband appreciated the photography! This restaurant has all the ingredients for a huge success. We will certainly be back, especially with the promise of a change of menu every two weeks. It is good to escape Penarth at last!!

The best BLT baguette I have ever had. Freshly prepared and the bacon was cooked just the way I like it. Many thanks!!!

So nice to find somewhere to eat close to home. We were passing last night on our way for a curry in City Road and took a chance. Lovely cooked food; we will definately pop in again.

We dropped by last night to try out the fare. Good food and service with friendly front of house people. Will keep an eye on the menu and pop in again.
Thanks for the vodka liqueur tasting.
All the best.

We thought that having a restaurant the did a 3-course vegan meal of an evening not 100yds from our front door would be something from the realms of fantasy. After all, where can you eat out if you are a vegan? And 3-courses???
Well, from fantasy into reality, as we found out at Canteen on Clifton Street, a new venture from Messers Thomas and Thomas (or Wayne and Tony to their friends).
Friendly, relaxed, good food, reasonable prices - what more could one ask for?
Vegan?
Oh yes!

Great web site. Leaving Oz to visit Wales in April. Will make a point of visting and tasting the cuisine. Sounds an excellent venture, hope it all goes well. Do you have a kids menu ? Wine list could be improved with a good Aussie Shiraz ! Cheers, G.

Had lunch yesterday and was pleasantly surprised, I was expecting a greasy spoon and got good, fresh pasta instead. I will be back. The evening menu looks very good, but I did notice that you don't take credit cards, which makes it more difficult.

Really sad to see you're not open at lunchtimes any more. Popped over for a girlie Saturday lunch last week to find no one there. I will miss your delicious pasta and risotto dishes, and Saturdays will not be the same without your sticky toffee cake! Looking forward to trying out the latest evening menu soon though.
